Karaoke with Caro and Eva

Over the years we have found ourselves "volunteered" to organize a number of AIIC and other professional events. We have always enjoyed these opportunities to do some "double braining" as we call it. It didn't take much arm twisting for us to accept the challenge of planning AIIC's 50th Anniversary Celebration in Canada, because we knew it would be fun!

By early October, 2003, (i.e. two weeks before the fateful event) we found ourselves in a school gymnasium in the village of Puvirnituq in Quebec's far north. Time was running out for creativeness, but between sessions in the booth we had to keep our feet and brains from freezing. Writing these lyrics was just what the circumstances required!

The 50th Anniversary Celebration on October 25th, 2003, began with the customary libations and buffet, followed by speeches. Soon the guests were properly "in voice" and the surprise guest conductor (François Ouimet) was introduced, while the lyrics were passed around.

After a few warm-up exercises the interpreters' "Yesterday" reverberated through the great hall of the Musée de Pointe à Callière!

As we observed the laughter and enjoyment of our colleagues, we realized we had produced a hit!

AIIC-Canada's 50th Anniversary Song
Music: The Beatles - Yesterday
1.  Yesterday,
Back when all of us were young not grey
First class travel was the only way
And fees we got / were high class pay

2.  Suddenly,
We're worth half of what we used to be
Clients tell us that "it's too much fee"
Oh, leaner times / came suddenly

Chorus
French A English B and a real exotic C
In our sound proof booths we are happiest to be

3.  Nowadays,
What we do is simply work from screens
And our speakers have no time it seems
They're forced to talk / in acronyms

4.  Gracefully,
Now that things have changed so drastically
We travel on the bus uncomfortably
While gadgets ring / incessantly

Chorus
French A English B and a real exotic C
In our sound proof booths we are happiest to be

5.  Wistfully,
We look back on days of yesteryear
Now that internet is so much here
For phone and fax / let's shed a tear

6.  Hopefully,
Though we live at such a souped-up pace
And computers take up so much space
There's no machine / to take our place

Chorus
French A English B and a real exotic C
In our sound proof booths we are happiest to be

7.  Finally,
Now that we have hit the big five-O
To our pioneers we say "bravo"
And as you know / we love you so
And as you know / we love you so
